from the Artistic Director...
There’s a place an hour East of Calgary where an ocean of prairie rolls down into a valley through which a railway track runs along a river where native Americans used to winter camp. Grandparents hold hands like young lovers as they walk down the street, pausing to listen to songbirds that fill the air with music no human composer can master. Students ride their bicycles down the street, rushing past with a wave on their way to class. Across the street Musical Director, Bill Hamm joins the farmers who gather around a collection of antique tractors during intermission. From as early as he can remember, he wanted to be a farmer. And some of those patrons wanted to be musicians at one time. So, Bill shares his pleasure in taking care of the tractors, and a retired farmer tells him that he’s been known to pull out his guitar at family gatherings. Stories are shared and patrons file back into the theatre for the second act. And after the show, an actress walks down the street with a patron, happy to hear how the story of the play and their own stories seem to have merged into one. Welcome to Rosebud, where everyone is a storyteller, and where every story is a window into the extraordinary spirit of a human being.
C.S. Lewis once wrote: “There are no ordinary people. You have never talked to a mere mortal.”
So, this season we will introduce you to a cast of immortal souls in five stories that end with surprises beyond their wildest expectations. The shows will be realized on the stage by carpenters, electricians, managers, designers, directors, dancers, musicians and actors who are also immortal souls sharing their art and their craft in order to bring laughter, light and life to you, our patrons. And we hope that in the telling of our stories, you will catch a glimpse of how deep and rich and full of life your own stories are. And we look forward to the conversations that draw us together under the magnificent prairie sky we all share.
